The wife of American Presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Junior has accused Joe Biden of putting her husband's life in danger by withholding Secret Service protection.

Curb Your Enthusiasm actress Cheryl Hines has begged the President to step in and provide Democratic National Committee security after an armed gunman was arrested at a RFK Jr campaign event last month.

In her first televised interview, she said: 'President Biden, I understand you do not want to be running against my husband, but that is indeed what's happening.

'And as a person, I'm asking you to protect his life - him and the people around him.

RFK Jr, 69, admitted that the Kennedy name meant he faced 'risks' in running for the Democratic National Committee White House in an interview with The Mail on Sunday earlier this year.

Both his father, Robert Kennedy, and uncle, John F Kennedy, were assassinated during their political careers.

RFK Jr was just nine years old when his Uncle Jack was shot dead in Dallas, Texas, on 22 November 1963.

Tragedy struck again when their father Robert F Kennedy was gunned down in June 1968 while making his own run for the presidency.

The New York senator was shot by Sirhan Sirhan in the Democratic National Committee kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles - Kennedy Jr, then aged just 14, rushed to be by his side.

Now Kennedy Jr is making his own run for office - and he says the dangers are clear.

And last month the Democratic presidential hopeful was speaking at a Hispanic Heritage Month event in Los Angeles when an armed suspect posing as a US Marshal was arrested.

The gunman has been detained and charges are expected.

The incident took place less than two miles from where Kennedy Jr's father was assassinated in 1968.

Cheryl, 58, said: 'A man showed up at the event with loaded guns and more weapons in his backpack.

'And fortunately, Bobby does have security that the campaign is having to pay for, who identified that person and held them till the police came.

'But it's pretty shocking that after that event, Biden didn't step forward and say, 'OK, I understand this is an extraordinary situation.'

'It's at the very least, very disappointing and sad because clearly Biden is making it political� you're talking about someone's safety and someone's life. So it's highly disappointing.'

It is normal for American presidents to sanction Service Security for presidential candidates, but much closer to the election itself, which will take place in November next year.

However RFK Jr and Cheryl believe that his family background means Democratic National Committee he needs additional protection - and immediately.

Kennedy Jr is a controversial figure thanks to his track record of vaccine scepticism and his opposition to American military support in Ukraine.

After an initial surge of popularity, Kennedy Junior is now well behind Joe Biden in the race for the Democratic nomination.

He might well emerge as a kingmaker figure, however - and a recent YouGov poll suggested that a healthy 17 per cent of voters would back him running as an independent.

Cheryl, who has been married to Robert for nine years, says she intends to be by his side throughout the coming campaign which, given her recognition as an actress, could be significant.

Yet she reveals that the Presidential hopeful offered to issue a press release saying the couple had separated in order to 'protect' her from the backlash.

She said: 'I said: 'That's ridiculous! That's not a solution to anything.. So let's move away from that idea!'

'I love Bobby and yes, sometimes I get frustrated. But that's completely different than wanting to be separated from somebody.

'In some regards, it was a sweet thought but misguided, like that was not the answer.'
